SD Eibar to host veterans' tournament on adjoining training pitch at Ipurua
Three rounds of Liga Solidaria Norte fixtures will be staged on Saturday 11 March
The SD Eibar Veterans' team has organised a tournament to be played on the adjoining training pitch at Ipurua next Saturday morning in which three matchdays of the Spanish Federation of Veteran Footballers' Associations' (FEAFV) Liga Solidario Norte will be contested.
The nine scheduled fixtures, to be played under the auspices of the league promoted by the FEAFV, SD Eibar Foundation and Eibar City Council, will take place between 09:30 and 14:00.
A total of 10 teams, including Eibar, will take their places in this tournament, to which supporters can gain free entry, whilst there will be a food collection, with contributions to go towards a local food bank.
The following 10 teams are set to feature: Valladolid, Sestao, Barakaldo, Osasuna, Mirandés, Logroñés, Gimnástica, Athletic, Real Sociedad and hosts SD Eibar ,with around 150 veterans aged over 35 set to descend on Eibar for the event.
In the presentation ceremony held to launch the tournament, the mayor of Eibar, Miguel de los Toyos, stated that, "Being involved in veterans' football is very special. What prompted us to participate in this initiative was the event's social element, as well as the opportunity it provides to collaborate with the food bank".
Meanwhile, SD Eibar's vice-president, Mikel Larrañaga, thanked the City Council for their "efforts" in the organisation of the event. "When the Eibar model is talked about, we at the club don't try to set an example about anything to anyone, we are what we are and come complete with our successes and failures".
"If we look at the values associated with the club, such as humility, sacrifice and teamwork, it is indeed the veterans who represent those very values, they're the true guardians of these values and that's why it is so gratifying that they're now a part of the club's structure".
