Historic point at the Santiago Bernabéu

Going into this clash, Eibar had never managed to score or collect any points in their previous visits to the Santiago Bernabéu, the home of the reigning European champions, Real Madrid. However, today saw José Luis Mendilibar's side set the record straight as they came away with an excellent point that will live long in the memory.

Things got off to a perfect start for the Armeros, when, with the home fans still taking to their seats, Fran Rico powered home a sumptuous Pedro León centre. The game was barely six minutes old and it was already looking like being an afternoon destined to enter the Eibar history books, following the visitors' first-ever goal at the Bernabéu. After this early setback, Real Madrid poured forward in search of an equaliser and it wasn't long in coming. On 17 minutes, Gareth Bale nodded home a Cristiano Ronaldo cross to restore parity. There was still a long way to go in the game, but the Armeros weren't fazed by the prospect.

The equaliser served to kill Real Madrid's momentum, as Eibar looked to restore their advantage. The hosts enjoyed plenty of possession but failed to pose any notable threat on Asier Riesgo's goal. The Armeros sought to break on the counter and they carved out several opportunities to have regained the lead. Indeed, in the closing stages of the first half, Los Blancos found themselves pinned back into their own area, but there were no further goals as the sides went in level at the break.

Real Madrid head coach, Zinedine Zidane, made a double substitution at the interval in an effort to reverse his side's fortunes, with Raphaël Varane and Karim Benzema being replaced by Nacho and Álvaro Morata. However, it was Eibar who looked the more menacing at the beginning of the second period.

Real Madrid did have the ball in the back of the net, however Morata's effort was ruled out for offside. The hosts then came within inches of completing the comeback when Bale's header crashed back off the upright. Eibar responded in the best possible fashion to these let-offs by carving out several chances of their own, as Sergi Enrich, Pedro León and Mauro Dos Santos all came close. 

At no stage were the visitors intimidated by their illustrious opponents or the stage, as they demonstrated the importance of team work in their efforts to achieve big things. As the final whistle sounded, the Eibar players celebrated a historic point, which they dedicated to the travelling faithful on an afternoon which will remain etched in Eibar memories.
