Eibar run brought to crashing halt at Benito Villamarín

SD Eibar slipped to a 2-0 reverse against Real Betis

SD Eibar succumbed to a 2-0 defeat in their trip to Real Betis, a reverse which brings the Armeros' three-game winning streak to an end.   The Andalusians took the lead with barely a minute on the clock and the visitors ultimately failed to stage a comeback in Seville.  With two minutes remaining, Dani Ceballos struck to put the result beyond all doubt.

Things couldn't have got off to a worse start for Eibar  after some intricate link-up play down the Betis right culminated in a pinpoint cross being headed home by French midfielder Jonas Martin.

After falling behind, José Luis Mendilibar's charges began to dictate proceedings, but the visitors failed to fashion any chances to draw themselves level. Indeed, Eibar had just two sights of goal in the opening 45 minutes. The first of these came on 14', when Iván Ramos got on the end of a Pedro León corner, before León produced a fine piece of play in the 33rd minute, only to see his effort fly wide of the upright.

After the restart, it was Betis who got on the front foot and Eibar barely troubled the hosts' lead. The Armeros' best opportunity fell to Alex Gálvez, who found himself all alone just outside the six-yard box, but his effort on the turn was brilliantly kept out by Antonio Adán.

In the closing stages, the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser and chances for Pedro León and Kike García came and went on a day when the Eibar players lacked a clinical touch in front of goal.

With Mendilibar's troops pouring forward in an effort to salvage a point, Ceballos fired home following a swift counter-attack that saw Betis wrap up the points.

This reverse brings Eibar's recent purple patch to an end. The next round of fixtures sees the Armeros play host to Athletic Bilbao on Monday 24 April at Ipurua (20:45 kick-off) in what's set to be a key fixture in Eibar's bid to keep their European dream alive.
