Eibar fail to guarantee eighth-placed finish

The Armeros failed to seal eighth spot

Today saw Eibar presented with the chance to have guaranteed an eighth-placed finish in front of their own fans and cap off a tremendous campaign. However, the Armeros were ultimately unable to overcome a Sporting side who despite running out 1-0 winners at Ipurua were nevertheless relegated to Segunda División.

The hosts made a bright start, finding some joy down the flanks and regaining possession on several occasions as they carved out two chances to have got their noses in front inside the opening 10 minutes, both of which fell to Adrián.

Gradually Sporting began to gain a foothold in the game, although it was José Luis Mendilibar's side that continued to boss possession.

With 32 minutes played, in what was Sporting's first meaningful attack, came the only goal of the game. Moi Gómez slipped the ball through to Burgui, who fired past Asier Riesgo and into the far bottom corner.

From this point on, Eibar failed to show the same conviction and struggled to threaten Cuéllar's goal.  Indeed, in the second period, Sporting fashioned a couple of fine opportunities to have built on their lead.

In the final stages, the Armeros, keen to treat the home faithful to another win, intensified their efforts and laid siege to the visitors' goal.  The hosts came closest on 75', when Cristian Rivera unleashed a drilled effort that cannoned back off the upright.

Sporting showed themselves to be organised at the back and held on to their lead, although in light of the draws for Leganés and Deportivo de La Coruña, their efforts proved to be in vain and they were condemned to the second tier.

At the final whistle, the Eibar players and coaching staff took to the pitch to pay tribute to the Ipurua faithful and thank them for their support, with the home fans showing their appreciation in what was a celebration of the best season in the club's history.

Thank you, everyone!
