Stoichkov fires Eibar to another victory
The latest goal from Stoichkov earned Eibar a 1-0 victory in Ponferrada
Eibar remain at the top of the LaLiga SmartBank table thanks to a 1-0 win away to Ponferradina. Stoichkov, who has scored in every game since the start of 2023, was the scorer of Eibar's winning goal this Saturday afternoon.
Gaizka Garitano's team approached the game with the intention of taking the initiative against an opponent who pressed high and looked for mistakes in order to attack vertically.
There wasn’t much danger created in either penalty area throughout the first half, which was one in which both teams had periods of dominance, although Eibar held a higher percentage of possession.
Los Armeros came out after the half-time whistle with a more determined performance and soon took the lead. In the 55th minute, Stoichkov capitalised on a rebound from a dangerous Corpas shot to score with a powerful right-footed shot from close to goal.
Six minutes later, in a quick-fire move, Yanis then had an effort hit the post, before he again came close in the 72nd minute, almost turning in a good ball that would have made it 2-0.
Ponferradina pulled out all the stops and made substitutions to try to avoid defeat, but Eibar were unrelenting in their efforts. They defended their lead effectively to record their third consecutive win, to the delight of the numerous Eibar fans in attendance at El Toralín.
