SD Eibar Women slip to 1-0 reverse in Basque Cup quarter-final first-leg clash

The Armeras will have to mount a comeback after succumbing to defeat in a game in which they were the better side

The SD Eibar Women's first team are tasked with staging a fightback after falling to a 1-0 defeat in their Basque Cup quarter-final first-leg bout against Berriotxoa in an encounter that they virtually dominated throughout.

Eibar began the game on the front foot and it wasn't long before they began to carve out a number of chances. The clearest opening of the first half came when Alonso played a sliderule pass into Sara, who contrived to fire straight at the Berriotxoa goalie.

Eibar were bossing proceedings as they played the ball around at will and opened up the opposition's defence, but the Armeras were failing to convert their chances.

However, it was the hosts who got their noses in front with a free-kick from range which caught Iratxe out.

The Armeras continued to dominate, retaining their composure and patience. This approach saw an excellent move culminate in Alfonso's effort cannoning back off the woodwork.

The start of the second period followed a similar script. The Armeras were well on top, whilst the hosts barely managed to get out of their own half. The chances began to flow as Estoy, Nahia, Sara and Alfonso all squandered opportunities to have levelled.

Eibar came closest when another Alonso free-kick struck the upright and Sara failed to turn the rebound home. The visitors kept on probing as they poured forward, but it turned out to be one of those days, with the home side running out 1-0 winners.

The return leg of the quarter-final tie is to be played on Sunday at 12:30 at Unbe and Eibar are confident of turning things around after having been the better side despite ultimately slipping to this first-leg defeat.
