SD Eibar stage official unveiling of Women's First Team

Félix Recio's side take their place in the National Women's Second Division for a second successive season.

SD Eibar Women's First Team, which is run as a part of the SD Eibar Foundation, was yesterday afternoon unveiled at a small ceremony attended by president, Amaia Gorostiza. The side, managed by Félix Recio, line up for a second successive year in the National Women's Second Division, where they are looking to retain their league status.

The team ended last season as Copa Vasca runners-up after a hard-fought showpiece against Añorga, in which the Armeras were ultimately edged out on penalties.

This year sees the head of women's football, Jon Elorriaga oversee the Women's First Team (as well as the two ladies' sides within the youth set-up: the teams that compete in the Territotial and Cadete de Honor leagues). This new appointment evidences the club's commitment to providing its women's teams with an improved infrastructure.

In the words of Amaia Gorostiza, "What the Women's First Team have achieved over the course of the past two seasons has been extraordinary and we're certain that they'll once again give us plenty shout about this year". The president went on to comment that, "Having a women's team in the Second Division is a massive help in SD Eibar's fight for gender equality in what's traditionally a very male-dominated world of football".

The SD Eibar Foundation have set themselves the objective of raising awareness about LaLiga's "revolution of the women's game" initiative, which is already being seen through the organisation's broadcasting of games and their search for a joint main sponsor. SD Eibar is seeking to promote the women's game and give it a more prominent role, as is the case in other European countries, such as England and Germany.
