Reunion with UD Mahón fifty years on

A delegation from the Menorcan club were guests in the presidential box, where they were hosted by club president, Amaia Gorostiza and Sergi Enrich

Sunday 21 May 1967 saw UD Mahón (champions of Group 8) and SD Eibar (champions of Group 4)  face each other in the battle to gain promotion to the Second Division.

Eibar slipped to a 3-2 defeat in Menorca, but ran out 3-0 winners in the second leg at Ipurua. This triumph saw Eibar go on to face Real Jaén CF.

At the time, the Second Division B (the Spanish third tier) didn't exist and the Armeros' attempts to return to the second tier, following relegation in the 1957/58 season, proved unsuccessful. Eibar remained in the Third Division for 18 years until the club were relegated to the Regional Division in the 1976/1977 campaign.

Fifty years on from that play-off clash, a delegation from UD Mahón, led by Paco Perea Villalonga (Coordinador of the Historical Association of Menorcan Football), was welcomed to the presidential box at Ipurua for the game against Valencia CF.

In the tribute, organised by the SD Eibar Foundation, those in attendance were able to admire the pennant that Eibar presented to UD Mahón in the 1967 fixture.

In addition to club president, Amaia Gorostiza, Menorca-born Sergi Enrich was amongst those who welcomed the guests after the game. The Cuidadela-born forward, who was the first Menorcan to score a goal in the Spanish top flight in the 21st century, hails from a family with a rich heritage in Menorcan football, with his grandfather having turned out for Esportui Alaior.
