Eibar salvage a point against Real Zaragoza from a numerical disadvantage (1-1)
Tejero’s goal earned a point in a game the Armeros deserved to win
A 77th-minute Tejero strike in the 77th minute, with Eibar down to 10 men, salvaged a point in a game which the Armeros deserved to win.
The first half was clearly dominated by Eibar, who clearly had the upper hand and had the chances to score and take the lead before the break.
Javi Muñoz and Corpas both sent shots narrowly wide in the early stages, while Matheus' left-footed effort from outside the area and Venancio's header just before half-time were both blocked by Cristian Álvarez.
In the last move of the first half, however, it was Real Zaragoza who took the lead with a goal from Jair, who took advantage of a scramble in the six-yard box to score from the floor. The 1-0 scoreline at the break was not a reflection of what had been seen on the pitch, with Eibar dominating and incisive.
At the start of the second half, the Armeros pressed forward and made clear progress into their opponents' area. The equaliser increasingly felt close.
However, the situation took a turn for the worse in the 67th minute when Vadillo was sent off with a straight red card after the referee, who had initially given a yellow card, consulted VAR.
Forced to make a titanic effort while playing with numerical inferiority, Garitano's team continued to believe and managed to equalise in the 77th minute through Tejero, with a right-footed shot from a tight angle after a pass from Ríos Reina.
VAR was again decisive in the 85th minute when the referee disallowed a penalty that had initially been awarded in Eibar's favour.
The game became a back-and-forth affair and ended with a share of the spoils, which may have been less than what Eibar deserved, but which had the added value of having been achieved with a player down.
