Eibar women’s team reach the quarter finals of the Basque Cup

The armero team won 5-2 in Erandio and are looking to reach the semi-finals by beating Pauldarrak from Barakaldo

This weekend, the SD Eibar women’s team made it through to the quarter finals of the Basque Cup by winning 5-2 against Erandio Betiko Neskak at the San Lorenzo ground in Erandio.

The armero team travelled to Erandio with several players missing, as the players with long-term injuries (Laura Prieto, Ainhoa Bilbao and Haizea Ribera) were joined by Irune Jimenez and Irati Lazkano, who had muscle problems.

The armero team dominated the start of the match, stirring up danger with angled passes to Melani and Ainhoa Alonso, who had more than one opportunity to put the team ahead. Erandio had one chance in a counter attack that was saved by goalkeeper Miriam Sanchez, who was making her first team début.

From then on, the armero team continued creating chances and in a breakaway down the wing, Ainhoa Alonso hit a centre shot that the home side’s defender, in her desperation to clear the ball, only succeeded in turning into her own goal. The team, coached by Félix Recio, had plenty of opportunities to finish the game off before half-time, but the score at the end of 45 minutes was 1-0.

A few minutes after the second half had begun, the referee gave a penalty for a handball inside the box and the home side took full advantage of the opportunity to score from 11 metres, despite the efforts of the keeper, Miriam, who came close to saving the penalty. Shortly afterwards, a free kick taken by Melani from out on the wing connected with Ainhoa Alonso´s boot, putting the armero team back in the lead.

From that moment on, the home side took risks and Haizea Lomba, running with the ball from midfield, put a perfect finish past the keeper to leave the scoreboard reading 3-1.  It seemed as though Eibar had completely dominated the game but Erandio had a dangerous shot at goal that Miriam did well to stop, making a great save to send the ball out for a corner. A little later, a breakaway down the wing and a killer pass led to a shot that Miriam could only parry and the ball fell to the rival forward, who made it 3-2.

The armero team raised the intensity in the final minutes of the game and Melani, after beating two defenders, executed a perfect one-on-one against the keeper to make it 2-4. Near the end of the game, Ainara Juaristi scored the goal that put the score definitively at 5-2.

The victory has meant that the armero team are through to the quarter final, which will be played against Second Division team Pauldarrak this weekend in Barakaldo.
