Dull affair sees Eibar secure quarter-final spot
The Armeros made the most of their 3-0 away triumph in the first leg to make history by progressing to the quarter-finals
This Eibar side tonight made history after having seen off Osasuna to take their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
The Armeros, who ran out 3-0 winners in the first-leg clash at El Sadar, capitalised on that advantage by holding the Navarran outfit to a goalless draw at Ipurua in a dull encounter in which neither side barely managed to muster any goalscoring opportunities.
The game was one of little incident, and as a result of their commanding position in the tie, Eibar lacked intensity and were satisfied to defend well, as they looked to prevent the Rojillos from posing any attacking threat.
Unfortunately, the most noteworthy incidents were the injuries suffered to players from both sides. Eibar lost David Juncà to an 11th-minute injury to his right leg, the extent of which is as yet unknown, whilst the visitors' goalkeeper, Nauzet Pérez, was forced off just minutes before the half-time interval following a clash with Nano, with the custodian's replacement, Mario, himself ending the game hobbling.
As the clocked ticked down, the Armeros focused their efforts on keeping a clean sheet and trying to catch the visitors out on the counter.
Much of the play unfolded in the middle third, with barely any chances for either side as the game petered out into a 0-0 stalemate, a result which sees José Luis Mendilibar's progress to the next round.
Of particular note was a first-team debut for feeder-team player, Imanol Sarriegi, with the CD Vitoria midfielder completing the full 90 minutes.
The draw for the Copa del Rey quarter-finals takes place tomorrow, Friday, at 12:00 noon CET.
