Defeat in Bilbao is harsh on Eibar Women

The Armeras succumbed to a 5-0 reverse in their Matchday 2 fixture against San Ignacio

After having got their campaign up and running with a win, Eibar Women slipped to a 5-0 defeat in Bilbao against San Ignacio in their second game of the season.

The hosts made the stronger start and looked a threat in the final third. Indeed, it didn't take long for their early dominance to be reflected in the scoreline, as San Ignacio took the lead when a fine move down the right resulted in a cross being put past the helpless Iratxe by an Eibar defender.

Despite this early setback, with eight minutes on the clock, the Armeras had a glorious opportunity to have restored parity after a fine piece of individual play from Mar. The Eibar forward picked up the ball on the edge of the area, drove forward and unleashed a shot which was destined for the far corner of the net, but the hosts' goalkeeper, Matiane had other ideas and pulled off a superb save to parry the ball behind for a corner.

The visitors made inroads into the home side's box on several occasions, forcing a string of corners, but these ultimately came to nothing. However, just several minutes later, the Bilbao outfit once again began to impose themselves on the game and on 25 minutes they doubled their advantage, courtesy of a sumptuous free-kick.

To further compound Eibar's misery, Esti was then forced off through injury, to be replaced by Naiara Lete. With 30 minutes played, the Armeras had already made two changes and they played out the last 10 minutes of the half a woman down after Oihane picked up a knock.

For the second half, Melani came on for Oihane and Eibar were back to the full complement of players. Just three minutes after the restart, the visitors came mighty close to reducing the arrears, as Ainhoa Alonso's corner from the left was kept out by the woodwork. A few moments later, Alonso once again tried her luck, but her shot was wide of the target. After the break, the warm conditions saw the tempo of the game drop and there was a further injury as a San Ignacio player was forced to leave the field of play.

The hosts went on to create further chances and came close to further extending their lead from a 65th-minute corner routine straight off the training ground. The game was all but over as a contest on 73 minutes as the hosts made it 3-0. A low drilled effort crashed back off the post and unfortunately for the visitors, the ball fell right at the feet of a San Ignacio striker and Mar was helpless to prevent the goal.

The blow of conceding a third goal, coupled with the stifling heat and the fatigue in the Eibar ranks saw heads drop, as the hosts went on to round off the win with further two goals.
