BIG WINS (LIII). The last big win came in the year of promotion to the Primera Division

A 6-0 win against Real Madrid B on November 17th, 2013

Eibar's last big win to date came in the season the club won promotion to Primera and it came against Real Madrid B, who were beaten 6-0 at Ipurua on November 17th 2013.

With this big win, we bring an end to the series on Eibar’s biggest wins, a total of 53, defining them as matches in which the Armero team scored at least six goals.

In this case, it was matchday 14 of the Segunda season, a fixture which Eibar came into after ending their three-game winning streak by losing at Tenerife with a poor performance. The Azulgranas were right in the middle of the table, in eleventh place.

Eibar's only substitute was the then right winger Ander Capa. Meanwhile, Los Merengues were suffering from the loss of outstanding players such as Jesé, Casemiro and Morata, who were promoted to the first team, and Real Madrid B sat bottom of the table.

Eibar lined up Xabi, Bóveda, Raúl Navas, Añibarro, Yuri, Dani García, Gilvan (Peleteiro), Errasti, Morales, Eizmendi (Urko Vera) and Arruabarrena (Diego Jiménez). Real Madrid played with players who would later become prominent figures such as the central defender Diego Llorente, currently playing for Leeds United in the Premier League, and the striker Raúl de Tomás, while the current first team player Lucas Vázquez was left on the bench.

Goals: After 20 minutes Eibar got the first goal when Raúl Navas broke away from the defence, passed to Eizmendi and his cross to Morales was put into his own goal by Casado. The scoreline remained the same until half-time.

There were no signs of the hurricane that would come in the second half. The second goal came in the 51st minute after a shot by Morales and Gilvan took advantage of the loose ball to score. Shortly after, Raúl de Tomás was sent off for a second yellow card. Gilvan Gomes scored again from the penalty spot in the 65th minute and the 4-0 goal came after a long play initiated by a Dani García cross which was headed goalwards by Urko Vera and the goalkeeper's save rebounded and was pushed into the net by Arruabarrena. Jota Peleteiro wanted to join the party even though he only came on for the final 15 minutes and in the 85th minute he headed in Yuri's cross from the left. In the 88th minute, the 6-0 scoreline was completed with a perfect pass into space by the Galician player himself, who set up Urko Vera to finish the rout.

Gaizka Garitano, who was the Armeros' coach at the time, had been part of Eibar’s biggest win in Segunda with the 7-0 defeat of Levante in 2001. The last big win before this one had come in Segunda B in 2010 with a 6-1 thrashing of La Muela.

Two days after the Ipurua match, Real Madrid sacked reserve team coach Alberto Toril.

At the end of the season, Eibar were crowned champions and achieved a historic promotion to Primera while Real Madrid Castilla were relegated to Segunda B.

11 of the 14 players who played for Eibar on that day went on to play in Primera, all of them except Gilvan Gomes "Esquerdinha",  a Brazilian player on loan from Hercules, Alain Eizmendi,  a Beasaindarra player on loan from Real Sociedad, and Diego Jiménez, adored by the fans at Ipurua, who left the club after winning promotion and continued his career for two seasons at Olimpic de Xativa in Segunda B.

The data appearing in this report and in all those that have made up this series of bigs win have been contributed by Eibar historian Jesús Gutiérrez, a member of the SD Eibar Fundazioa Board of Trustees.
