BIG WINS (LII). A victory headlined by Lanzarote’s magic and Altuna’s touch

Eibar overcame La Muela by a 6-1 scoreline on November 14th 2010

The magic of Manu Lanzarote and the touch of Jon Altuna made the headlines when Eibar produced a 6-1 thrashing of La Muela in a match played at Ipurua on November 14th 2010.

Between the Catalan winger and the centre-forward from Gipuzkoa, they were involved in all six of the goals scored against the Aragonese team in that Matchday 13 encounter, part of the Segunda B Group II.

On that day, Eibar’s line-up was as follows: Irureta; Gañán, Añibarro, Bingen, Valín, Albistegui, Txiki Lombraña, Alex García, Altuna, Lago Junior, Lanzarote. Coming on as substitutes were the Dutchman Weijl, plus Souto and Nacho Garro, as they replaced García, Lago and Lombraña.

Goals: In the second minute, the Ivory Coast forward Lago Junior, on loan at Eibar from Numancia that year, opened the scoring with a tight shot from a Jon Altuna pass. In the 16th minute, the skilful Manu Lanzarote increased the lead after being presented with a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Patricio thanks to another precise pass from Altuna, with the Catalan winger finishing well. In the 28th minute, the pacey left winger Alex García made it 3-0 after a ball from Lanzarote, taking advantage of a rebound in the box. Before the break, in the 36th minute, Altuna scored a goal of his own to make it a 4-0 lead, producing a header off a Lanzarote cross. The scoreboard stayed as it was until the 81st minute, when the away side’s Bruna beat Xabi Irureta from the penalty spot, but there was still time for two more Eibar goals in the final minutes. The first was scored by Dutch winger Vincent Weijl, his only goal in 15 Eibar appearances across two seasons, and was once again set up by Lanzarote. Shortly afterwards, Gustavo Souto from Vigo made it 6-1, which proved to be the final scoreline.

There was an Eibar link in the Aragonese team that played that day, as their centre-forward David Mainz signed for Eibar at the end of that campaign, staying for the following three seasons, although there was a brief break to go and play in Bolivia.

Not only was this big win a memorable day for the Eibar fans, but it meant that, by the end of this matchday, Eibar were top of their group with 29 points, followed by Alavés who were two points behind and Mirandés who were four points behind. In the end, Eibar finished as group winners ahead of Mirandés and Alavés, but fell in the play-offs. After a loss to Sabadell in the ties for group winners, Eibar were then eliminated by Alcoyano, losing on both cases because of away goals. That meant they had to stay in the Segunda B division for another year.
