Appointment with history: Eibar's first big win in La Liga (2014)
Relive the azulgrana memory that connects with the next commitment of SD Eibar at Ipurua against UD Almería.
Eibar's debut season in the First Division was marked by a very successful first half. After the thirteenth matchday, Almería visited Ipurua in a match played on Monday, December 8, 2014. Eibar, managed by Gaizka Garitano, lined up with Irureta, Bóveda, Raúl Navas, Lillo, Saúl Berjón (Capa), Boateng, Dani García, Manu del Moral (Errasti), Piovaccari (Abraham), and Arruabarrena.
After 2 minutes, the Italian Piovaccari opened the scoring by beating goalkeeper Rubén. In the 21st minute, the Asturian Saúl Berjón extended the lead, and half an hour into the game, the Valencian center-back Raúl Albentosa scored the third, reaching halftime with a convincing 3-0.
In the second half, Fernando Soriano, current sporting director of Deportivo de La Coruña, reduced the deficit for Almería, but shortly after, the Sevillian center-back Raúl Navas scored his first goal in the top category with a header, establishing Eibar's fourth goal. In the 74th minute, the Portugalujo Ander Capa scored his first goal in the First Division with a precise shot into the top corner. In the final moments, the Tenerife-born Edgar Méndez scored the second goal for the Andalusian team, leaving the final score at 5-2.
In this way, Eibar achieved their first big win in La Liga and won again at Ipurua, something they hadn't done since the opening matchday, when they defeated Real Sociedad 1-0. Despite the excellent performance of the team, Gaizka Garitano warned after the match that he wasn't looking at the standings and that Eibar would have to struggle to secure their place in the league. Meanwhile, hours after the match, Almería dismissed their coach Francisco.
