A summer course on nutrition and football held in Ipurua

Key speakers attended a conference organised by SD Eibar Fundazioa and the UPV/EHU

Ipurua's North Grandstand was the venue, on 7 June, for a Summer Course entitled "The Value of Nutrition in the Training Load of the Footballer" organised by SD Eibar Fundazioa and the UPV/EHU.

The course, the first of its kind to be held in a Basque football stadium, had record attendance by 150 students.

One of the UPV/EHU's objectives was to provide other Basque towns with access to the Summer Courses in order to encourage reflection on each of the topics covered.

In the specific case of this course, the academic institution also sought to highlight SD Eibar's role within its social setting, working together with the University of the Basque Country.

A panel of top level professionals made up of doctors, nutritionists, physical trainers and experts in physical activity and sport from First Division Basque football clubs such as SD Eibar, Athletic Club or Real Sociedad, but also others such as FC Barcelona or Atlético de Madrid, in addition to the Department of Physical and Sports Education of the EPV/EHU, presented the main developments and key issues relating to sports nutrition and its impact on training load and competition.

The course will provide up-to-date information on the main methods of load control, including state-of-the-art sports nutrition, with a focus on the top male elite teams, but will also pay special attention to the specifics of women's football and the lower categories.

The course, directed by Julio Calleja, an Associate Profesor of the Department of Physical and Sports Education of the UPV/EHU, and Alberto Fernández, Chief Medical Officer of SD Eibar, was attended by speakers like Toni Caparrós, physical trainer of the NBA team Memphis Grizzlies (NBA); Juan José Morillas, nutritionist of AS Mónaco FC; or Juan Antonio Corbalán, ex international basketball player.
